"Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others." Dr. John C. Maxwell

I was in my early twenties when I began to discover the power of leadership. This discovery led me to an insatiable quest to learn more about the subject of leadership. For years, I always thought that only highly gifted individuals, the wealthy, and those who came from families who were intellectuals were called to be leaders. Boy, was I wrong!

You Have What It Takes

Potential is often viewed as an ability that someone has that can be developed to help that person become successful. Every human being possesses within him or her at least one gift that may be potentially dormant. Scratch the surface of any soul and you will discover at least one talent or gift (a treasure) that can add value to others. The tragedy is that we often neglect to search deep enough into the recesses of our inner being to start the process of discovery. If you dig deep enough, you will discover that you already have the seeds or potential to lead well.

Beware of the Snares

I believe that one of the greatest plagues in human history is selfishness. Self-serving people are the most dangerous people on the planet because they will do anything to promote themselves even in the name of service. Many are doing things in the world to advance their own selfish agendas.

One of the greatest dangers of being a leader and perhaps the greatest threat to those in positions of influence is pride. Please make a note of it; arrogance, self-righteousness and pride are not your friends, they are your enemies. Leaders do not grow and are not experiencing transformation when they allow the deadliest virus in leadership to reside in their lives.

Add Value to Others

Leadership is a gift. Over the years, I have come to the realization that great leadership is often developed through personal growth, observation, empowerment and experience. As a leader, I must love others and add value to them.Business leader and American writer Max De Pree once said that, "We cannot become what we need to be, remaining what we are." Become the change that you want to see. Leaders lead with authenticity by maximizing their potential and by serving others.

Think of all the people that have impacted your life over the years, you will find one common thread with all of them. The one thing that all transformational leaders have in common is that they all discovered who they were created to be and decided to bridge the distance between their potential and the realities of their lives.

I urge you to discover your potential, lead and serve others.
